History of Tanzania

1498-1502

The Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama is known to be the first European

citizen to visit the Tanzanian coast. In fact, he visits Tanzania twice. On his second

visit Vasco makes Kilwa tributary. This eventually had an impact on Portugal to

control most of the coast of East Africa. 

 

German Colonisation Society begins to acquire territory on the mainland

1884-1886

In order for Germany to have influence over majority of Tanzania, Germany and Britain sign an agreement. However, their agreement did not involve the coast of Tanzania; which was under the authority of the sultan of Zanzibar.

1961-1962

Tanganyika becomes independent with Julius Nyerere as prime minister. This independence was also very significance to the East-Africans because it was the first independence in that particular area. A year later, Tanganyika becomes a republic with Nyerere as president. The new name was later on officially change to republic of Tanzania.

1964

Julius Nyerere, in full Julius Kambarage Nyerere who became the first president of the new state of Tanzania. Nyerere was also the major force behind the Organization of African Unity (OAU; now the African Union).

5th Feb, 1967

The Arusha declaration is known as Tanzania’s most prominent political statement of African Socialism or brotherhood. This declaration is divided into five sections:

  • The TANU “Creed”;

  • The Policy of Socialism      

  • The Policy of Self Reliance

  • The TANU Membership

  • The Arusha Resolution

 

The establishment of the CCM party

1977

Tanganyika African National Union and Zanzibar's Afro-Shirazi Party

come to an agreement to create the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party. The CCM Party was classed as the revolutionary state Party and also it was confirmed to

be the only legal political party in Tanzania.

 1985

Due to the first President of United Republic of Tanzania Nyerere retiring , presidency was replaced with Ali Hassan Mwinyi. During his President period he eased out Nyerere’s socialist ideas and implemented his own ideas down.

 

Train Disaster

2002

Nearly 300 killed in Tanzania's worst train disaster after passenger train loses power and rolls into freight train at high speed.
